2 Mistakes To Avoid When Applying For A Liquor License

by Daryl Young

Obtaining a liquor license for your business can be a game changer. The ability to legally sell alcohol could translate to increased profits. Unfortunately, the road to actually getting the license is long. The time it takes could be seriously extended if you made mistakes that are easily avoidable. To help you avoid some of the pitfalls that others fall into in pursuit of their licenses, here are some mistakes to avoid.

Applying for the Wrong License Type

Unless you have been through the process of applying for a liquor license in the past, you might not realize that there are dozens of types of licenses available. Failing to apply for the right license could lead to a denial or delay for you.

For instance, if you apply for an event permit license, but you want to operate a portable bar, you could face a denial. You also have to be specific in the type of liquor you want to sell. For instance, there is a difference in the license for selling wine and beer.

To avoid this, take the time to research the license types available in your area. Once you know your options, you can select the right licensing and submit your application.

Waiting Until the Last Minute

Despite rumors that you might have heard, the process to get a license could take months. If you wait until the last few weeks before your opening or the day that you need to license, you could be out of luck. There are several steps involved in obtaining a license.

For instance, in addition to completing the initial application, you also have to comply with various requirements and undergo an inspection by a state beverage control inspector. Depending on your state's laws, you might even have to attend a hearing regarding the license.

At minimum, you should start applying for the license five to six months before it is needed. Applying at an earlier date helps to ensure you have time to meet all of the requirements before your big day.

Regardless of the state in which you plan to serve liquor, the process to obtain a license can be complex. To avoid any missteps that could result in a denial or delay, consider working with a professional service. A consultant can help pinpoint what steps you need to take to ensure you are meeting all of the deadlines that are set by the state. For more information, contact local professionals like Arizona Liquor Industry Consultants.
